Australian Smaller Companies

Akambo Future Leaders Fund

An actively managed portfolio of Australian smaller companies, built to identify tomorrow’s market leaders today.

An actively managed portfolio of Australian smaller companies. This asset class is attractive because many sell products and/or services that are new to the market and are often led by their founders. This provides significant alignment, often missing from their large cap (S&P/ASX 100) peers. Furthermore, it offers diversification away from the large cap index which is dominated by certain sectors, such as a handful of banks and global miners. In turn, this can deliver higher growth and therefore greater share price appreciation particularly as they are in their early stages. In fact, many large cap stocks start life as a small company.

Small cap stocks are generally under researched and can be prone to significant volatility and speculation. However, this suits active management, particularly a manager like Akambo with a Growth at Reasonable Price (GARP) investment style.

The fund invests in 20 to 35 companies, primarily from outside the S&P/ASX 100. The fund employs a successful strategy that has been operating since June 2017 by portfolio managers Andrew Perks and Geoff Greetham. It is considered high risk and suits investors with a minimum five-year timeframe. You can invest directly from $10,000.

Philosophy & process

We believe markets can be inefficient which can create opportunities for active managers. Inefficiencies are caused by many factors, but predominantly:

  • Herd mentality (the crowd must be right) and mistaking popularity over value
  • Fear (both of missing out and of loss)
  • Blue sky potential of companies and sectors that overshadow others.

So we focus on…

  • Searching for companies which have several catalysts to grow earnings or where earnings could be re-rated.
  • These companies must be understandable businesses in growing industries, run by competent management, and at attractive prices.
  • We amin to buy for 5 reasons and hold for 3 years as catalysts are delivered. We are patient investors and capital preservation is important. What we call “win by not losing”

Process

When an investment is identified it must pass through a quality funnel examining the industry, the company’s position in that industry and management.  We then identity catalysts which are incorporated into our valuation. It then must also satisfy a range of financial metrics. Positions are capped at 10%, the Fund uses no derivatives, shorting or leverage, and every trade requires Chief Investment Officer approval.

The team

Andrew Perks has spent 29 years in investment and finance, including research leadership at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and UBS and nine years selecting small caps at Invesco Australia; he has managed this strategy since its 2017 inception. Geoff Greetham brings more than 35 years across banking, corporate finance and investment management, and founded Accordius in 2007. They are supported by an investment team of seven, an independent risk officer and Chief Investment Officer oversight, and both have significant personal investments in the strategy.
